Does Instagram Notify When You Screenshot a Story, Post or DM?

Whether Instagram tells someone when you screenshot or screen-record their story, post or disappearing message, what the person who posted can see, and the privacy settings Canadian creators and small businesses can use.

You see something on an Instagram story you want to keep, such as a recipe, a sale price or a friend's new apartment in Montréal, and the question comes up: will they know? This guide answers it for stories, posts and private messages, based on Instagram's Help Centre and Meta's own announcements, then covers privacy settings for creators and small businesses.

The short answer

No. Instagram does not tell anyone when you screenshot their story, feed post or reel. Disappearing photos and videos in chats work differently. Here is each case as Instagram's Help Centre described it when we checked on 27 October 2026:

What you doDoes the other person find out?
Screenshot someone's storyNo
Screen-record someone's storyNo
Screenshot a feed post, reel or profileNo
Watch someone's storyYes, your username appears in their viewer list
Screenshot a View once or View twice photo or video in a chatScreenshots of this media are now blocked; if Instagram detects one, the sender can see it
Replay a disappearing photo or videoYes, the sender is told
Screenshot a message in vanish modeYes, if Instagram detects it

Apps change, so if a detail matters, search the Help Centre for "disappearing photos" or "vanish mode".

Stories, posts and reels: no screenshot alert

Instagram's Help Centre describes screenshot alerts in only two places: disappearing photos and videos in chats, and vanish mode. Its articles on stories, posts and reels, including the viewer list, mention no screenshot notification. The person who posted gets no alert and no mark next to your name. The same goes for stories shared with a Close Friends list, and for public and private accounts alike.

What the person who posted can actually see

The author gets some information, just not about screenshots. According to Instagram's Help Centre:

  • Who viewed it. By swiping up on their own story, the author sees the number of views and the usernames of the people who watched each photo or video. Only the author can see this list.
  • For how long. The viewer list stays available for up to 48 hours through the Stories archive, although the story disappears after 24 hours unless added to a highlight.
  • Replays. The view number counts replays, so it can be higher than the number of usernames when the same account watched more than once.
  • Your interactions. Replies and story likes reach the author, because they are things you choose to send.

So "can they see my screenshot" and "can they see that I looked" have different answers. If you watch a story, your name is in the viewer list whether or not you take a screenshot.

Screen recording a story

Screen recording follows the same rule. Instagram's help pages describe no alert for recording a story, reel or post. To the author, recording a story looks the same as watching it: you appear once as a viewer, and replays add to the view count.

Disappearing photos and videos in DMs: the exception

Private chats are where screenshots matter, but only for disappearing media, not ordinary messages and photos.

View once, View twice and Unlimited views

When you send a photo or video from the camera in a chat, Instagram's Help Centre says you can choose:

  • View once: the person or group can open it a single time.
  • View twice: the recipient can open and replay it one more time before it disappears. This is the option older guides call "allow replay".
  • Unlimited views: a preview image stays visible in the chat thread.

The sender can't reopen the media but sees a status under it showing whether it was seen, and the Help Centre says the sender is notified if you replay it.

Screenshots of disappearing media are now blocked

In October 2024, Meta announced that people would no longer be able to use their device to directly screenshot or screen-record "view once" or "allow replay" images and videos sent in Instagram DMs or Messenger, and that this media would not open on Instagram on the web. A Meta post in February 2025 said the ability had been removed. Instagram's Help Centre now says that taking a screenshot is disabled for a disappearing photo or video sent in a chat.

Some Help Centre articles still say the sender can see if Instagram detects a screenshot. Read that as a backstop: a detected capture can show up in the status the sender sees.

Vanish mode

Vanish mode is a separate chat setting: you swipe up in a conversation, and content disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. The Help Centre says someone can still screenshot or screen-record a message before it disappears, and the other person receives a notification if Instagram detects a screenshot. It also notes that anyone can photograph a screen with a second device.

Didn't Instagram test story screenshot alerts?

It did, briefly. In February 2018, TechCrunch reported, and Instagram confirmed, a test in which some users saw a warning before screenshotting a friend's story, and a small camera-shutter icon appeared next to their name in the author's viewer list. By June 2018, Instagram told BuzzFeed News it had stopped testing the feature. That old test is why some people still believe stories send screenshot alerts.

What about apps that say they show who screenshotted you?

Instagram does not show story screenshots to anyone, not even the author, so there is no list for an outside app to read. Apps that promise one usually want your Instagram login, and Instagram's Help Centre warns people to be careful before giving third-party apps access to their account. Skip them.

Privacy tips for Canadian creators and small businesses

For a café in Halifax, a salon in Calgary or a creator in Vancouver, the takeaway is simple: anything on a story can be saved without you knowing. Decide what goes on a story and who sees it. Menu names can move between app versions.

  • Treat every story as public enough to be saved. Leave out customer names, addresses, order numbers and booking screens, and ask before featuring a customer.
  • Use Close Friends for a smaller audience. You can share a story only with your Close Friends list. People on the list will know they are on it, and nobody can ask to be added. Good for previews for regulars, but it doesn't stop screenshots.
  • Hide your story from specific people. Go to your profile, tap the menu, then Story, live and location and Hide your story and live videos from specific people. This is not blocking: those people can still see your profile and posts.
  • Turn off or limit resharing. Public accounts allow anyone to reshare their stories by default. Under Sharing and reuse, you can set story-to-story sharing to Everyone, Followers you follow back or Off, and turn off sharing your stories in messages. The Help Centre notes that people who reshare your story show it to their followers, even if your account is private.
  • Control story replies. Under Messages and story replies, choose who can reply to your stories.
  • Know where public stories appear. If your account is public, your story can also show up in Search and Explore, and on the Instagram map if you tag a location.
  • Use highlights on purpose. A highlight keeps a story on your profile after 24 hours. Use it for hours or a menu, not personal stories.

Where our pages fit

Story views tell you who is watching, not who is saving. If stories reach too few people, start with content and timing. Some accounts also use an Instagram story views package so a new story does not look empty, or add Instagram followers to a new business profile. These only change how the numbers look; they do not change any privacy setting, and they do not bring customers, replies or sales by themselves. We only need your public username or link, never your password; the profile must be public, you pay by card through a secure checkout in USD, and delivery timing varies by package. The Instagram hub lists our other Instagram pages and free tools.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?
No. Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot their story, including stories shared with a Close Friends list. The author can see that you viewed the story, because your username appears in their viewer list, but nothing shows that you took a screenshot.
Does Instagram notify when you screen-record a story?
No. Instagram's Help Centre does not describe any alert for screen recording a story, post or reel. The author only sees view counts and the usernames of viewers. Screen recording is treated differently in vanish mode and for disappearing photos and videos in chats.
Can Instagram see when I screenshot a disappearing photo in a DM?
Instagram now blocks screenshots of View once and View twice photos and videos sent in chats. Some Help Centre articles add that the sender can see if Instagram detects a screenshot, and the sender is also told when you replay disappearing media.
Does Instagram notify screenshots in vanish mode?
Yes, when it detects them. Instagram's Help Centre says the other person receives a notification if Instagram detects a screenshot of a message in vanish mode. It also warns that someone could photograph the screen with another device.
Can someone see how many times I viewed their story?
Not directly. The author sees your username once in the viewer list. The total view count includes replays, so it can be higher than the number of usernames when the same account watched more than once.
How do I stop people from sharing my Instagram story?
Go to Sharing and reuse in your settings. Set story-to-story sharing to Off or to Followers you follow back, and turn off sharing your stories in messages. Public accounts allow resharing by default.
