Why subscribers matter on YouTube

Subscribers are the people most likely to see your next upload. When you publish, YouTube often shows the video to some of your existing audience first, and how they respond can influence whether it is shown more widely. A channel with a small but engaged audience gives each new video a better starting point.

Subscribers also matter for the YouTube Partner Program, which has subscriber and watch-time requirements. Those requirements must be met with genuine subscribers and real watch time. Packaging decides whether someone clicks at all. Use honest, specific titles and simple thumbnails with readable text. Misleading packaging may win a click but loses the viewer, and with them the subscribe.

3. Deliver value in the first seconds

Skip long intros. Show viewers quickly that the video answers the question in the title. Videos that hold attention are more likely to be recommended and to earn subscriptions.

4. Publish on a schedule

Consistency gives viewers a reason to subscribe: they know more is coming. Pick a pace you can keep, whether that is weekly or every two weeks. Check YouTube Studio for when your audience is online; Canadian channels often have viewers across several time zones.

5. Use Shorts to reach new people

Shorts can introduce your channel to viewers who would not find your longer videos. Link Shorts to related long-form videos so curious viewers have somewhere to go next.

6. Ask clearly, once

A short, specific request ("subscribe if you want the next part of this series") works better than a generic reminder at the start of every video.

7. Build community

Reply to comments, use the Community tab, and collaborate with creators in your niche. If you make content in both English and French, consider subtitles or separate playlists so both audiences feel welcome.

8. Share outside YouTube

Post clips on Instagram and TikTok, add your channel link to your other profiles and newsletter, and take part in communities where your topic is discussed, following their rules.
